Abstract

The aim – to study the structure of cancer, its age and gender characteristics among patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) in the context of an oncological process.
Materials and methods. A total of 647 patients with PE were examined, among whom 105 patients (16 %) had acute pulmonary artery thrombosis associated with malignant disease. Since some patients were diagnosed with an advanced metastatic stage during the examination, making it impossible to determine the primary tumor site, they were excluded from further analysis (3 patients, 2.8 %).
Results. Analysis of cancer structure among patients with PE showed that solid tumors significantly prevailed over hematologic malignancies. The three most common cancer localizations were breast cancer (21.9 %), prostate cancer (17.1 %), kidney cancer (14.3 %), and colorectal cancer (12.4 %).
Conclusions. The most common cancer localizations among patients with PE are breast and prostate cancer. Gender differences and cancer localization influence the clinical manifestations and course of PE.
